Pilot Interview Profile:

Everything that has been posted previously on this site is accurate. We gathered in the Rosewood Room at 8 am. We were given a short briefing on the company and various paperwork. We were handed an application and went over in detail on how to fill it out. I highly recommend that you have a copy of the timegrid before going to the interview! I got mine from a sample Continental application from Air Inc. There are web sites with the grid. You should also have your 10 year background information compiled. Everything else is straight forward. There is absolutely no need to have the application before going to the interview. Otherwise, there's nothing to do for a couple of hours. We were randomly called out to interview starting at about 9:30. My interview started about 10. I was asked the following questions: How did you get into aviation? Where do you see yourself in 5 years? You're Captain smells of alcohol, what do you do? What's a MORA? What's a MOCA? What do the different colors for the MORA numbers mean? Where do see yourself in 5 years? Rank your top three airlines? Why Continental Express? How far do the touchdown zone markings extend? What is centerline lighting? Who else have you applied to? When can we descend below MDA? What are your long-term career goals? These are in no particluar order. The entire process was about 40 minutes. My best advice is be honest, totally. I know everyone says that, but here's my example: I have family at UAL, I worked for UAL, and I said UAL was my number one airline and I would plan to interview there in 2-3 years. I was asked repeatedly if Continental was my top choice. Obviously, I would have been lying if I said Continental was my number-one airline. My background shows that it's not. I did explain that with industry trends, who knows what my list would be in 2-3 years. I certainly felt uncomfortable during the questioning, but I knew it was honest. After lunch we were a few people short. Some were called back for a second interview. Some of those people came back and some did not. Finally there were four of us remaining and we were all offered a job. My interview was in no way confrontational or unprofessional. My transcripts or letters of recommendation were not looked at though during the interview. That probably took place in private. Study the regulations and AIM. Have the grid completed and your 10 year background. Be honest and relax.

I interviewed yesterday. 800tt, 195 multi. 12 of us total, 3 set home before lunch, and I was the 4th one told to wait for the call after the
second interview (after lunch). I don't know if anybody was offered on the
spot or not.

The gouge here is still pretty accurate. 12 minute, 50 question test,
followed by paperwork while they call you one at a time to interview.
Everybody's interview was different. This is what I got

Moca
91.175
Show time in 20 minutes and the plane isn't cleaned/preped and the prep crew
cannot get there for an hour, do you go or wait?
Vmc(how does hot air effect it, how does aft CG effect it)
What defines mountains terrain?
When do the centerline lights change color?

The rest was HR questions.

Why Coex?
Rank top three regionals/majors
Why should we hire you?
What would you rank your instrument skills?
Tell us one aspect of your job you don't like.
What do you most enjoy at present job?
What was your most nerve racking moment in an airplane?
Tell us about when you had to make a command decision while flying?
Driving record review.
College transcript review.

The interview only lasted about 20 minutes and it was a pleasant experience.
Not confrontational at all.

It seems that the hiring pool that everyone is used too is thinning rapidly. In the group that I interviewed with nobody was over 1000TT or 200ME. We
showed up to the rosewood room at the Holiday Inn North at around 7:45 and
John Dresser, John North, and Frank Adams all strolled in right at 8:00.
They were all very nice, but all business. John Dresser talked about the
company and what we would be expecting that day. We filled out some
paperwork, took the Wunderlich test, don't worry about it at all, and then
started filling out our applications. Try to get ahold of an application
before hand and fill it out. It will take you a few hours. One of the guys
was out on his cell phone every other minute trying to get information that
he didn't know off hand and he was one of the guys that got the early ride
home. It will save you tons of ti! me and frustration and is the best advice I
can give you. While we were filling out our apps. they started calling us
out for personal interviews one by one. Each interview lasted between 15-30
minutes and had very little technical questions. What is true airspeed?
What are the speed limits underneath Class B. How does a constant speed prop
work? Very basic stuff. They really want to get to know your personality
and are very interested in you as person. Just be straight forward, admit
when you are wrong, and show them that you are excited to be there. I only
had one interview the other gut that got hired had two. There really is no
logic in the way they do things but they are very good at what they do and
know exactly what they are looking for. Good Luck and don't kill yourself
over this one. Just be yourself.

I interviewed with in December of 2000 and found that the personal interviews will differ from person to person. There really isn't any technical gouge to study, just know the AIM and applicable instrument FARs. Scenario questions ranged from: 1) worn down tire and captain says its ok to go 2) captain remains at MDA even after the MAP 3) captains seat belt comes off at V .... Make sure you are familiar with the VOR/GPS Wacco Approach (Jepp. Plates are used). Get the application ahead of time and just be yourself in the interview. There is no determined method on how aircrafts are assigned.

the gouge info was very helpful, and i did many of the things that were offered as good advice. dressed very
appropriately, had a folder with an emb145 on the front, had all the
work history, living history, and grid filled out before the
interview....didn't matter. good luck if you're not a CFI!!! eight
interviewed, all were called back for a second interview, only four were
offered jobs. it's really hard to say what they're looking for. i
would have loved to work for coex, but the feeling wasn't mutual.
