Trans States Airlines Pilot Interview Profiles

Date Interviewed: July 2004
Summary of Qualifications: 2800 TT, 2300 PIC, 520 ME, 500 turbine, part 135, ATP, and military
Were you offered the job? No
Pilot Interview Profile:

Pretty much as all of the older profiles go. The group consisted of about 8 people. Experience ranged from 600 total time to some pretty high time guys with plenty of multi time.

I was notified via airlineapps.com. They fly you positive space to STL and you get a discount room. The hotel provides shuttles to wherever you need to go so don't worry about that. Just tell them you are an interviewee and they know the routine.

First was the written test-- you need 80% to pass. Nobody busted the test as far as I know. It was pretty standard stuff-- airport markings, instrument rules, general stuff. Brush up on the AIM and FAR part 91 and you should be fine.

The HR part went pretty fast for all of us. I think the longest interview was about 5-7 minutes. They look over your logbook, ask a fairly simple systems question based on the plane you are flying or have flown recently(mine was how does a jet engine work) and asked which domicile I'd prefer and why. This is a good time to ask a question of them. Do a little research and have something prepared to ask-- even if you know the answer. The panel of 3 were all friendly and put us all at ease. Just sit up straight, answer the questins and be yourself. Nothing too scary here.

The sim was my downfall. The profile was pretty standard, but I hadn't flown a frasca before. What a piece of... uh, equipment. They offer an instructor and sim for about $150. the night before you interview. If you want the job, I strongly suggest that you invest this money in the practice. I did not. The folks that did it said that the profile was pretty much the same as the practice. They also did it as a group so there was plenty of hangar flying going on.

My profile was takeoff, steep turns, vectors, then clearance to hold. Nobody actually had to hold, they just wanted to know what entry you would use. Then vectors to an ILS and full stop. Some of us got a VOR hold, some and NDB. Be sure to call for checklists, check weather, and use them as a copilot.

Some guys in the cafeteria said that TSA is hiring a bunch of pilots this year, but most of them have already been hired. Interview groups earlier this year were in the 15-20 range and lately have been 10 or less. So the competition is pretty good. Also, the current situation that USAirways is in may affect growth and plane deliveries. Good luck and fly safe.

Were you offered the job? Yes
Pilot Interview Profile:

Interviewed on the 11 trans states flew me down positive space. not much has changed still 50 question multiple choice basic stuff
when do you need take off alt.
when do you go missed.
stages of thunderstorm .

then on to the personal interview.lasted about 15 to 20 min with three people
one from human resources some questions where why tsa that type of stuff
next was airplane spicific they had me explane the fuel system on the plane I'm
flying
then it was the Assistant cheif pilots turn he asked some situational things
like what would you do if the captain didn't use checklist? then had me explane
an NDB if needle was pointing to this heading which way would you turn to get
back on course.

to the best of my knowledge nobody in my group had to do the sim but i heard
the interview group ahead of us did.

oh ya make sure you know your driving record for 10 years that is part of the
paperwork you have to fill out

Pilot Interview Profile:

My interview experience is basically what has been written here. There is tons of paperwork to fill out, so be sure to come prepared. At 9 am, four
captains came in and started talking about the company. They were very
friendly and willing to answer any questions. Come to think of it....everyone
I met was extremely friendly. Once they were done, they passed out a 50
question, multiple choice test. Some questions were:

When is DME req.?
Stages of a thunderstorm?
Where is the MAP on an ILS?
When do you need an alternate for takeoff?
What do you do if you have experienced windshear? (pirep)
Which of the following is a primary control surface?
If you are shooting the approach from a DME arc, where is your lead in radial?
What axis does longitudnal stability affect?

The rest were pretty much the same as the previous gouges.

Next it was on to the sim ride in the Frasca 142. Make call outs for
checklists, but don't mess with the radios, they'll do it for you. And
believe me, you want to keep your eyes scanning, so don't mess with the
radios! It's not too hard to keep it straight and level, but if you look away
for one second, it really gets away from you. So be careful when copying
clearances. It was straight forward, I was given a clearance, departed, 180
steep turns, NDB hold, then vectors for the ILS to a full stop.

Next I was scheduled for a personal interview. Two captains asking a few
questions. Lasted about 15 minutes. They asked what I was currently doing.
How someone I've flown with would describe me. Where do you see yourself in
5 years? Asked to read a METAR, and a TAF. Based on that wx, would I need an
alternate? Takeoff mins? Next I was asked questions about a Jepp plate.
Highest terrain? MSA? etc. Also study the airport diagram, I was asked about
that as well. If LAHSO is in operation, how far do I have to land.

Pilot Interview Profile:

The night before I did the sim prep at the Outer Marker, and was teamed up with another pilot to be
interviewed the next day. There were six of us for that day for the most

brief, and said they were really short on
F O's and the upgrade time is quick! We were given the 50 question
written booklet told us it was new! But if you have been studying the
ATP, FAR -AIM it's no big deal.
metar KDEN WIND VIS R26R6000 010 OVC SN BR what's the R26R 6000RWY 26
RVR 6000 is it 1,000 ovc or 100,
What's SN BR - snow mist,
If ATC just said "cleared as filed" does it include SID, route, altitude
and STAR?
When do you go missed on an ILS? DH or MM
Primary flight controls - out board ailerons
Minimum fuel - can not accept any undo delay
Longitudinal stability about the lateral axis
200 kts in class D 2500 agl 4nm
Runway hold signs -white script on red background
What is V1?
VOR checks
Effect of frost on a wing
Alternate minimums for 121
Temp range for moderate icing
When can you deviate from a FAR?
The rest of the gouge on the written is pretty much the same type of
questions.

On the sim:
Frasca 142: Takeoff full power
V1/ Rotate 80 kts 9 degrees of pitch, positive rate / gear up
CALL OUTS ARE VERY IMPORTANT FOR EACH PHASE
Initial Climb - Full Power, 500 ft power reduction
Climb 25"/2500 RPM 7 degrees pitch 120 kts
Cruise 23"/2500 RPM 0 degrees 160 kts Cruise ck list

Reduce power to 17"/2500RPM 120 kts 30 flaps (Vfe140)
Approach ck list
OM Approach descent 17"/2500 gear down 120 kts

Why TSA, Jepps Approach plate, Airport diagram, Enroute stuff
Scenarios on lost com, holding speeds
Asked if I had speeding tickets, enforcement actions on my pilot
