Pretty much as all of the older profiles go. The group consisted of about 8 people. Experience ranged from 600 total time to some pretty high time guys with plenty of multi time.
I was notified via airlineapps.com. They fly you positive space to STL and you get a discount room. The hotel provides shuttles to wherever you need to go so don't worry about that. Just tell them you are an interviewee and they know the routine.
First was the written test-- you need 80% to pass. Nobody busted the test as far as I know. It was pretty standard stuff-- airport markings, instrument rules, general stuff. Brush up on the AIM and FAR part 91 and you should be fine.
The HR part went pretty fast for all of us. I think the longest interview was about 5-7 minutes. They look over your logbook, ask a fairly simple systems question based on the plane you are flying or have flown recently(mine was how does a jet engine work) and asked which domicile I'd prefer and why. This is a good time to ask a question of them. Do a little research and have something prepared to ask-- even if you know the answer. The panel of 3 were all friendly and put us all at ease. Just sit up straight, answer the questins and be yourself. Nothing too scary here.
The sim was my downfall. The profile was pretty standard, but I hadn't flown a frasca before. What a piece of... uh, equipment. They offer an instructor and sim for about $150. the night before you interview. If you want the job, I strongly suggest that you invest this money in the practice. I did not. The folks that did it said that the profile was pretty much the same as the practice. They also did it as a group so there was plenty of hangar flying going on.
My profile was takeoff, steep turns, vectors, then clearance to hold. Nobody actually had to hold, they just wanted to know what entry you would use. Then vectors to an ILS and full stop. Some of us got a VOR hold, some and NDB. Be sure to call for checklists, check weather, and use them as a copilot.
Some guys in the cafeteria said that TSA is hiring a bunch of pilots this year, but most of them have already been hired. Interview groups earlier this year were in the 15-20 range and lately have been 10 or less. So the competition is pretty good. Also, the current situation that USAirways is in may affect growth and plane deliveries. Good luck and fly safe.
