Envoy Air Pilot Interview Profiles

Date Interviewed: August 2007
Summary of Qualifications: 1700 Total 600 Multi
Were you offered the job? Yes
Pilot Interview Profile:

Information is still pretty much as gouged. No ATP test, H.R. Interview is the same as gouged. The person conducting the interview chooses 5 questions from a pool of standard questions and asks them. Tech Interview: Study your approach plates. RVR is a must. DP's and Lo Charts were also asked about. My advice is when they ask you a question is look around the chart or plate, the answer is always in your face. Do NOT sweat the simulator! If you are IFR Current you should not have a problem at all. Bill will tell you EVERYTHING you will do during the sim ride, and its exactly what has been gouged. So you are getting the information twice! Turst me! They want you to pass. All you need to have is the right attitude, and be knowledgeable. Relax! Be Yourself, and you will get the job.

only here to comment on the sim check ride. The rest is easy and if you follow the gouges it is exact and they are very friendly and make you feel at home. Be prepared to wait in a room for a long time during the HR and Tech portions. Yet, when you go to the simulator portion for your check ride be fore warned... Bill is an older man who will do his best to impress you with how much he knows. He will also make it clear that HE IS IN CHARGE. He simply is not the type of guy you want to question, because he is apt to snap at you quickly. He is not like the rest of the staff at AE. As if the pressure isnt enough...
So my advice is to not ask any questions and listen up well. Follow all procedures and check lists and dont let him get you upset. If you use the F100 flight sim go easy on the trim. Too much and you will be fighting it.

If you have this same experience of the check pilot (Bill) then PLEASE GOUGE IT!

Good luck!

ALL the gouges are correct. The HR is great and they simply want to see what you are about. The technical interviewer made me feel relaxed and it helps. Just know what you are told to read up on in the gouges and you will pass the TECH and HR portion for sure.
NOW LETS TALK ABOUT THE SIM CHECK RIDE... BILL is the person who does the walk through in the simulator building. Your suitcase and any additionals are places next to a glass window around the corner where you enter the big building. He also does a preflight in a small room for 4 and we were 7. He will do his best to show you he knows about everything as he asks each of you about your past experience. He has a layout of the instruments posted on the wall and he points to things and gives a basio over view. YET be careful if you ask any questions. He is abrupt and can even be rude. He simply seems to have a point to prove. HE IS IN CHARGE! I asked about use of the rudders when tracking a VOR in the FAULKER 100. He threw a fit. NOT after 1000 feet use the rudders as a foot rest! (he shouted with a glaring look at me) But he then went on and on about it. He spent about 7 minutes on a simple question. YOU will see what I mean when you get there.
This man in my opinion is BURNT OUT! I also felt he does not handle himself in a professional and calm fashion.

If anyone who has been through this experience agrees please submit it. Hopefully someone at AE will read this and do something about it. I certainly wish I had a heads up about him before I went there.

Good luck...

All the gouges are right on. There shouldn't be any surprises. Went to job fair in Chicago, did tech and HR interviews there. DUI in last 5 years were told not to bother applying, about 25 came in morning for presentation (+ cool free t-shirts!). 9 came back in afternoon to do interviews. 7 were offered trips to Dallas. All other gouges are correct but I will add the sim profile.
Those who did the HR and Tech at a job fair could show up at 1130, those who hadnt been to job fairs had to show at 7. 2 of us went together, we were glad to sleep in. We found out that they will bring you to Dallas without the required flight time, then send you home for not having it. Several people from this group were asked to get their things and shown the bus stop. No explanations, but also weren't told they have to wait 6 months to reapply. HAVE YOUR PAPERWORK IN PERFECT ORDER AND BE CONSERVATIVE. They want screwy things on the app like all your times broken down by type and PIC time not to include Dual Given. Logbook Pro is about the best way to do it. Your after the mechanics were done with their written, we had some nice conversations in the holding room. One of the flight attendants was hot so I talked to her. Would you believe that their interview process is easier than ours?

Unless you can get an hour in a full motion sim before you go, just do as many ILS 24R's at LAX as possible. We had the Fokker, depends what's available that day I guess. He does everything, you just fly and touch thrust levers in the right direction, but if you MAKE YOUR CALLOUTS, he will fine tune it. Vr rotate pitch real high, like 15 or 18 degrees.
"Pos rate gear up."
"1,000' set climb thrust, flaps up, climb check."
"3,000' set thrust 200kts, cruise check."
He will say Eagle 1 Advise ready to copy. Then you ask him to take the controls while you write. It will be direct Seal beach VOR, then vectors for an ILS to a go around, all with the flight director on. If you havent used one, use one before you go, it's easy if you've ever even seen one before. Then he backs you up for a "raw data" ILS to an ungraded landing. I was last guy and we were out of time, so I got the raw data one first and that was it. One guy washed on the sim, but I'm sure he'll be back soon since he made it that far. He'd never seen a full motion sim and it's kind of a mind job being in that thing. The 2 121 guys offered to go first so the rest of us could memorize the profile and callouts. The wait was long and scary. We could not determine a connection between how much the sim was moving and how well the guy in it was doing.
The rest of the profile, btw:
2200' 180kts: "set thrust 180, flaps 8, descent check."
150 kts: "set thrust 150, flaps 25, approach check."
GS alive, pitch -2.5: "gear down"
GS 1 dot above: "set 140 thrust, flaps 42, before landing check."
Go around full thrust, pitch 15 deg: "set max thrust, flaps 15, pos rate, gear up"

For personal reasons upgrade time is not my highest priority and I live in Chicago so Eagle is #1 choice. I have friends that cover the whole range from didn't get hired to just finished training. The guy who didn't get hired took the interviewing experience and is going to Skywest, so he is happy. The guy who finished training said it went smoothly, not too hard, took base guarantee (it's true, you just tell them where you want), and by default (he was youngest in class), got his choice of equipment, so obviously, he is happy. You really can't lose trying this out. Good luck to all, I'm off to Dallas for 6 1/2 weeks!

Arrived at Headquarters just before 7:30 A.M. Make sure you have all your requested paperwork with you! This is a sure way to get sent home early if you dont have it with you. Bring the original and at least one copy! Throughout the day you will have three portions. HR, Tech and the Sim. The HR was very straight forward. Know some basic Eagle history and just show them you want the job. Be yourself and be positive. Remember that they are looking to hire someone that a Captain can share the cockpit with over the course of several days and be able to get along with. Some of the questions were- what is your most successful achivement in life, What has been you biggest dissapointment, describe yourself in one word, why should eagle hire you. next i had the tech. A captain by the name of Brad gave the tech. Study low enroutes in detail, SID's, STAR's, approach plates and 121 crew flight limitations. How many hours in a week, month and year. how much rest in 24 hr period. The tech probably took about 30 minutes. Brad is ver laid back. He will also go over with you, your log book. If you have any mistakes or discrepencies go ahead a make notes on a post it note and place them in your book. that way brad will know before you meet him for the tech. you will turn in your logbooks first thing. The last phase is the sim. The interview class before mine and the day of mine both flew the Foker 100. You will depart LAX 24R and intercept the 265 radial from the Seal Beach VOR and track it to the station, remember to fly the reciprocal 085 to the station. this seems to be the standard each day. I was instructed to hold on the 350 radial-non standard turns. After i approached the brief correctly he did not make me hold. he will set you up for the ils 24r lax using the flight director to DA. next he will set you up just inside the FAF for a raw data "fly the needles" approach to a full stop. You will have two gauges to be concerned with. The attitude, altimeter and airspeed will be on one. and the HSI will be the second. Full glass cockpit. Bill will spend about an hour before you actually fly the sim to instruct you on what the sim ride wil consist of! Remember to use Bill- the non flying pilot as much as possible. gear up, flaps up, climb check list, climb thrust, etc. It will certainly reduce your workload. I had never been in a full motion sim before. I recommend if you get a chance to at least find a pcatd and configure it in the baron 58 and fly the lax 24r approach and practice hold as fast as you can in the baron. it helped me! hope this helps and good luck!
