Started just like all the other gouges. Stayed at Candlewood, they informed me about the time of the morning shuttle, then went to my room to study a little. Next morning showed up in the lobby about 720 (may want to bring a sleep aid), then off to HQ, it's almost within walking distance from the hotel.
From here the begining is the same, get a badge, sign in, sit in a room waiting for someone to take you to the holding tank. Someone will come in take your logbooks, and someone else will give a quick brief of the company. We started with 9, but 1 was kicked out due to the logbooks. He had said his logbooks were pretty messy anyways. After this they start choosing you to start the process.
I went first, and had HR, the guy was a FO on the ATR. Very nice guy, asked me the same usual questions. Why AE, why you, something you want to change about yourself, your proudest moment, etc. No big deal.
Went back to the holding tank, then 30 minutes later it was sim. My profile was LAX 24R. Takeoff runway heading to 3000'. Once there, left turn 210, right turn 350, left turn 090 intercept the 230 radial off of SMO and track inbound. Hold NE on the 030 radial, right turns, 1 munte legs, efc time. It was a parrallel for me. As i crossed over, "start time, advise ATC we are entering the hold." outbound one minute turned back in intercepted my inbound, asked me which way i would turn after crossing the VOR, and when I would start my turn. No tricks. Have them do everything, and call for the checklists. That was it for that.
Went back to the tank, 30 minutes later, start the tech. This was with Nick the guy I had been talking to on the phone. VERY relaxed. Started out with a little conversation to loosen you up, then rapid fire.
When do we need a takeoff alternate? If the wx is below minimums for your departure airport.
How far away can it be? 1 hour, still air, one-engine inop.
If the active runway has landing minimums of 600' but the other runway is 200', and the weather is 400' do we need an alternate? No, it is any runway for the entire airport, not just which one is active.
Asked me about 121 rest requirements, and what I would do if I lost my medical. I am prioir 121, so if you are not, you probably wont get these questions.
APPROACH CHARTS:
Can we do this approch with this METAR, RVR was 2400v2800, approach required RVR1800.
How low can the vis be, I said 5,5,5.
Can Eagle do that? I said, I dont know, my company was 6,6,6. Found out Eagle is the same.
Pointed and said whats this with; displaced threshold, and highest point on the chart.
Asked the landing distance beyond the threshold (turn it over).
Name 5 things you need to descend below DA.
How low can we descend on this approach. I messed up, said 118, the answer was 113, got into a hurry.
ENROUTE CHARTS:(alot of pointing)
What's the top of DFW class B, 11000'.
Said we were at 10500' in B, whats the speed? Unrestricted.
We were under the B shelf, 200.
Asked about a VOR that was not in a box, its not on an airway.
When would MEA and MOCA be the same, within 22 miles of the VOR.
DEPARTURE:
Asked what would be my initial altitude?
Pointed to a star like thing and said whats this. I wasn't sure, GPS way point.
Is it fly-over, or fly-by?
Why are thise ones shaded, compulsory reporting points?
ARRIVAL:
We need to descend from here to here, how fast are we going to descend, I said about 2500' fpm.
What speed do we need to be at here?
There were a few other questions, but this is the bulk of it.
We went to lunch, came back, a few minutes later they came a got me. Asked how I thought I did. Told him I thought i did good on the sim, missed a few on the tech, and hr was easy. He said well the jobs yours if you want it congrats. Signed, fingerprinted, and was on my way by 130pm.
I know out of the 9, 2 did not get the job, and 2 of us did, but besides that, I have no idea about the other 5.
Good luck! |
