Envoy Air Pilot Interview Profiles

Date Interviewed: November 2011
Summary of Qualifications: 500+ TT, 75 ME, CFI, CFII
Were you offered the job? Yes
Pilot Interview Profile:
First off, I will not sugar coat this by saying, "it's not too bad" or "you'll be fine"...This is a very STRESSFULL interview day that requires you to bring your A game.

Fly into DFW, call hotel for shuttle to candlewood. Food is nearby within walking distance. Study and relax for the next morning. Wake up at about 6:15, lobby and checkout by 7:20. Shuttle leaves 7:30 sharp. Get to HDQ2, get security badge, and walked down to the AE lobby. At 8, escorted to classroom "holding tank".

F/O comes in and collects logbooks/pre-interview packets. MAKE SURE YOU INCLUDE ALL JOBS, TICKETS, ETC. EVERYTHING. It will make things run a lot smoother. F/o leaves, video about AE plays, then the waiting begins. You will be called out randomly for any one of the 3: H.R., Tech, or Simulator.

H.R.
-Paperwork: have EVERYTHING on checklists and copies of everything. Have everything done.
-Why AE
-What qualities does a good F/O have?
-Hardest part of training will be?
-Something to change about yourself?
Then we just had a conversation for 10 minutes. Nothing bad at all.

SIM
-Frasa 142 Beech Baron G1000
Fly from the left seat.
Take off memphis 9, climb to 3,000, left, right, track 090 to MEM inbound. Transfer the controls then copy your holding instructions. He freezes the sim so DRAW IT OUT IF YOU NEED TOO!! TAKE YOUR TIME AND MAKE SURE IT"S RIGHT! Then readback and take controls back. Fly the hold and call to report to ATC you are entering the hold. Leave the hold and get vectors for the ILS 18R. FOllow down to 50' then land. Your DONE.

The Sim is very sensitive, just use your fingertips to climb etc.
Power is :
Takeoff - FUll
Climb - 26-27"
Cruise - 18" (Pull it WAAY back)
Decend - 16"
Approach - 16"ish
If you use these power settings, the airplane will fly the correct speeds.

Use your PNF for EVERYTHING: Heading bugs, call for checklists, freqs, hold controls while you copy hold and brief approach. If you do it right, your hands wont leave the yoke or throttles. DONT TOUCH THE RUDDER PEDALS DURING FLIGHT.

TECH
KNOW YOUR JEPPS!!
Aircraft of your choice?
Max t/o weight?
Max ramp?
Fuel? Usable?
Electrical System? Gen?
Answer Confidentally but know it as well.

RVSM? Where?
Required DOCS?

Jepps, Takeoff mins? weather is 6-6-6 and runway requires 5-5-5, we can depart.

DEP Proc.
GPS waypoints? NON compuls reporting points
transitions?

Enroute
Alot of pointing and questions about airspeeds in different airspaces. Just know all the sysmbols and numbers

App Plate.
Where is the FAF on ILS?
Weather goes bad outside FAF vs. inside FAF?
Decode TAF
Decode Metar and determine if we can land.
2200v2800, landing required 1600RVR so yes we can land.

In the morning, 2 were sent home, after lunch 4 more. Out of 10, 4 of us were offered the job.
Bring your A game and alot of focus, as well as a personable attitude. Be prepared for a long day but stay focused and you'll do good!

Were you offered the job? Yes
Pilot Interview Profile:
Arrived at DFW the night before the interview. Checked into Candlewood Suites, very nice place for about $70/night. Next morning caught the 730 shuttle to the HDQ2 building. Checked in at about 735. HDQ is only about a mile from Candlewood. Waited until about 8, then we were escorted to the proverbial "holding tank". They grab everybodys logbooks and Pre-Interview packets and put on an AE video. One applicant was removed in the first hour. Then, a recruiter comes in and explains a little bit about AE. Another recruiter comes in around 9 and explains the sim profile and hands everyone a sheet with the profile and a Jepp copy of RWY 18R into MEM. Then the interview process begins in no particular order. Interview took from about 8-3pm. Fly out of DFW the same day.

Tech- Max T/O weight, gross weight, Battery and Generator voltage of aircraft you choose. V1, V2, 35' obstacle clearance plane. T/O Alternate and when do we need one and how far can it be?
Airport Diagram- Alt min, T/O min, displaced TH symbol, distance remaining after Dis. TH.
Dep Proc.- GPS waypoints, star symbol, initial alt.
Enroute- Ceiling of Class B, IFR and VFR airport colors, MEA guarantees?, Does it guarantee comm reception?
Lost comm procedures
App plate- Metar, can you do the app.?. DA, is DME required?, notes on app plate.

HR- What makes a professional?, Why AE?, Why you?, When would you take the controls from the captain?, Something you would change about yourself?, Describe yourself in one word. HAVE YOUR PAPERWORK DONE!

Sim- Climb at 135 kts straight ahead to 3000 then right turn to 230 cruise at 160 (18" MP). Intercept the 090 radial to MEM. Transfer the controls and he gives you holding instructions. Enter the hold. Leave holding for RV for the ILS 18R. Intercept the ILS 18R 120kts w/o the flight director and land.

Summary: HAVE YOUR PAPERWORK DONE! Know your Jepps (I recommend King Schools), Know some system stuff your the aircraft you most recently flew or have the most hours in. I didnt really get asked any 121 stuff other then T/O alt. (probably a good idea to be familiar with it though just in case). If you study the gouges you'll do fine. Good luck!
Date Interviewed: October 2011
Summary of Qualifications: 1000TT, CFII
Were you offered the job? Yes
Pilot Interview Profile:
Everythings the same as detailed before so I won't waste space.
Tech-no secrets about Jepp questions (DFW diagrams, DPs, STARs).
HR-make sure you have copies of each item requested front and back.
Sim-volunteer to go first, apparently he goes easier on the first person. Also, you won't have to read your profile over and over waiting for others to finish in the sim.
Lastly, have all the power settings memorized. They're expecting you to have read people's past sim experiences either on this site or another.
Good Luck!
Date Interviewed: September 2011
Summary of Qualifications: 800TT, 450Multi, Part 135 Experience
Were you offered the job? Yes
Pilot Interview Profile:
Previous gouges were pretty spot on.

Tech (Approx 30 mins)-

Current A/C:
-Fuel capacity
-Battery Voltage
-Alternator Amp
-Just answer confidently on these so they don't dig any further as you may trip yourself up.

-V1,VR,V2

Enroute Charts-
-MEA
-MOCA
-GPS MOCA
-Grid Mora
-Total distance between VORs
-NDB
-Green vs Blue Airport
-Tops of Class B/C airspace
-How do you know the operating times of D airspace?
-Speed Restrictions under Class B
-How to Identify Area Charts
-Isogonic Lines (Lines of magnetic variation)
-Red dashed line around airport (SVFR prohibited)
-How do you know if an airport has a soft rwy?
-Reporting points (Compulsory)
-Changeover point
-why is this navaid box not shadowed?

Airport Diagram
-Hot Spots
-Displaced TH
-Weather 8-8-8, can we depart? If we have an engine failure can we land? Say we just departed and you have an engine fire and can't put it out... What are you going to do? (Declare an emergency, shoot approach and go below mins to get that puppy down)
-Distance beyond threshold?
-Can we use this airport as an alternate?
-When do we have to file an alternate?

SID/DP
-CRAFT clearance with initial alt and frequency missing.

Approach Chart
-MSA?
-What vis do we need?
-Whats controlling on the approach (RVR, then Reported Vis, then Tower Vis. Ceiling has not bearing)
-FAF? Where is it on an ILS? Localizer?

The majority of it is scenario based.

If you dont know an answer to a question, just say "I don't know." Do not BS them. Remember, It's safer to fes up and admit you don't know than to guess and endanger aircraft. I said I dont know about three times, and each time he just guided to the answer.

HR

-Have your paperwork done, and if you can come prepared with extras of each thing. Its better to have too many original docs than be missing one.
-First 10 minutes were just talking about me and discussing previous employment.
-Why AE?
-Why you?
-What makes a professional pilot?
-When would you take the controls from a captain?
-Whats one thing you would change about yourself (make sure you show them that you are working on changing that)

Sim-ILS 18L MEM

-Depart 090 heading, climb 3000, 135 kt
-Intercept 090 radial TO MEM VOR
-Enter hold, start time (I never flew the actual hold, just told him my intentions and which way i would turn)
-Alternator failure (Call for alternator checklist, Declare and Emergency and ALWAYS ASK FOR THE TRUCKS)
-Alternator Failure takes away the flight director, so the one approach is raw data
-Intercept at 2000, break out at 600, fly the needles down to 50 and then land.

Do not over think the sim, its straightforward with no tricks. Be confident in your call outs and alway give him the flight controls when copying down hold instructions or approach clr/briefing.

9 of us started, 3 of us got a pre-offer. One or two left early due to paperwork, the others I have no clue about. Just go in and be yourself, everyone is super friendly and if you studied you shouldn't have anything to worry about.
Date Interviewed: September 2011
Summary of Qualifications: 2100 TT, 1300 MULTI, 1100 TURBINE, PART 121
Were you offered the job? Yes
Pilot Interview Profile:
Started just like all the other gouges. Stayed at Candlewood, they informed me about the time of the morning shuttle, then went to my room to study a little. Next morning showed up in the lobby about 720 (may want to bring a sleep aid), then off to HQ, it's almost within walking distance from the hotel.

From here the begining is the same, get a badge, sign in, sit in a room waiting for someone to take you to the holding tank. Someone will come in take your logbooks, and someone else will give a quick brief of the company. We started with 9, but 1 was kicked out due to the logbooks. He had said his logbooks were pretty messy anyways. After this they start choosing you to start the process.

I went first, and had HR, the guy was a FO on the ATR. Very nice guy, asked me the same usual questions. Why AE, why you, something you want to change about yourself, your proudest moment, etc. No big deal.

Went back to the holding tank, then 30 minutes later it was sim. My profile was LAX 24R. Takeoff runway heading to 3000'. Once there, left turn 210, right turn 350, left turn 090 intercept the 230 radial off of SMO and track inbound. Hold NE on the 030 radial, right turns, 1 munte legs, efc time. It was a parrallel for me. As i crossed over, "start time, advise ATC we are entering the hold." outbound one minute turned back in intercepted my inbound, asked me which way i would turn after crossing the VOR, and when I would start my turn. No tricks. Have them do everything, and call for the checklists. That was it for that.

Went back to the tank, 30 minutes later, start the tech. This was with Nick the guy I had been talking to on the phone. VERY relaxed. Started out with a little conversation to loosen you up, then rapid fire.

When do we need a takeoff alternate? If the wx is below minimums for your departure airport.

How far away can it be? 1 hour, still air, one-engine inop.

If the active runway has landing minimums of 600' but the other runway is 200', and the weather is 400' do we need an alternate? No, it is any runway for the entire airport, not just which one is active.

Asked me about 121 rest requirements, and what I would do if I lost my medical. I am prioir 121, so if you are not, you probably wont get these questions.

APPROACH CHARTS:

Can we do this approch with this METAR, RVR was 2400v2800, approach required RVR1800.

How low can the vis be, I said 5,5,5.

Can Eagle do that? I said, I dont know, my company was 6,6,6. Found out Eagle is the same.

Pointed and said whats this with; displaced threshold, and highest point on the chart.

Asked the landing distance beyond the threshold (turn it over).

Name 5 things you need to descend below DA.

How low can we descend on this approach. I messed up, said 118, the answer was 113, got into a hurry.

ENROUTE CHARTS:(alot of pointing)

What's the top of DFW class B, 11000'.

Said we were at 10500' in B, whats the speed? Unrestricted.

We were under the B shelf, 200.

Asked about a VOR that was not in a box, its not on an airway.

When would MEA and MOCA be the same, within 22 miles of the VOR.

DEPARTURE:

Asked what would be my initial altitude?

Pointed to a star like thing and said whats this. I wasn't sure, GPS way point.

Is it fly-over, or fly-by?

Why are thise ones shaded, compulsory reporting points?

ARRIVAL:

We need to descend from here to here, how fast are we going to descend, I said about 2500' fpm.

What speed do we need to be at here?

There were a few other questions, but this is the bulk of it.

We went to lunch, came back, a few minutes later they came a got me. Asked how I thought I did. Told him I thought i did good on the sim, missed a few on the tech, and hr was easy. He said well the jobs yours if you want it congrats. Signed, fingerprinted, and was on my way by 130pm.

I know out of the 9, 2 did not get the job, and 2 of us did, but besides that, I have no idea about the other 5.

Good luck!
