Arrived at 8:30 A.M. Started with presentation of company which owns Chataqua, Frontier, Shuttle America and Republic. After that a 20 question aviation test. Study the Gleim book or other ATP prep book. Everyone in group of 13 passed. Took the wonderlick test next. It does not really count, so do not worry about it. After this, they start the sim session. The sim session is about 20 minutes long. They set up the sim (Canadair 200 Regional Jet), you are on the runway and everything is set up for you. The pilot in the left seat just tells you how far to push up the power and off you go. He pulls up the gear and flaps for you and sets up everything for you, you just fly. You just follow the command bars (the V type), climb out at 200 kts to 5000, then level off and fly at 200 kts (you pull the power back). After that, it is some turns and then a descent at 200 kts. You will slow to 180 kts,m then get vectors for an ILS 5L at Indianapolis. You fly it down to minimums, then look up and land. The instructor helps you with the judgement, but does not land the airplane for you, as the landing is not judged. The HR/pilot section was very straightforward. Nothing was asked about systems of the aircraft you are flying. Some technical info such as briefing an approach plate (be familiar with Jep and Gov't charts), and ask a professional pilot on how to brief it. Know how to read a METAR and TAF and determine if you need an alternate (123 rule). They asked some questions about centerline lights when they start to change colors from white. They asked me about the ILS 4R at JFK, and how I would enter the hold. The sim instructor asked me how I would enter the hold at Indianapolis, but they don't make you fly it. They ask the standard why would you be a good First Officer, why Republic? I was the last one to be interviewed and the last one to fly the sim. The sim guy is fine, no problems, and the pilots are fine. HR are good. Make sure you have copies of all your documents and bring the originals. Make sure you have an FCC restricted radio telephone operators permit also, and a resume. They asked me if I had one and I didn't. It is not required, but nice if you have it. The Embassy Suites has a rate of $65/ night plus tax. Good deal, and they take you to Republic headquarters about 1 mile away. The aviation test had questions such as what should all crew members have, and that is a operating flashlight, when can ice become a factor, and that is less than 5 degrees Celcius. Just be perpared, and either fly a sim or get into an airplane and shoot an ILS if you haven't done so in a while with command bars. They will paperwork in advance to fill out. Pretty easy to do, and complete before you go in. They admin people at Republic are very helpful. This was my 1st interview in 32 years, and it went pretty good. It is not impossible, but focus while you are at the interview and if you have done any multi engine or jet flying, you should be be fine. Sim is a bit sensitive, as it flies like a sim. don't over control it. Good Luck. I have 8 months until I retire, and even though they offered me the job, I have to interview again in 6-7 months as your paperwork is only good for 6 months. I found out 1 day after the interview that I got the job. |
